What a home EV charger installation actually costs in Wilmington, NC, broken down by charger type, panel capacity, and circuit distance. Cliff quotes every job itemized: hardware at cost, labor separate. The number on the quote is the number on the invoice.
Every job is different. Distance from your panel, panel capacity, and whether the run goes through conduit or romex all move the number. Here's what we typically see in the Wilmington area.
Level 2 Charger Installation
Call for Quote
Dedicated 240V/50A circuit from your panel to the charger location. Price depends on circuit distance: a panel in the garage is cheaper than a panel on the opposite side of the house. Includes breaker, wiring, mounting, permit, and inspection.
Tesla Wall Connector Installation
Call for Quote
Same dedicated circuit, plus the Wall Connector hardwire. Tesla requires a 60A breaker on a 6-gauge wire. We're certified Tesla installers . the install is done to their spec, which matters for the warranty.
What Affects the Price
Circuit distance from panel to charger . every extra foot of wire adds cost
Panel capacity . if your panel is 100 amps or full, you may need a panel upgrade first
Conduit vs. Romex . exposed runs through a garage use conduit, interior walls use Romex
Garage vs. outdoor . outdoor installs need weatherproof enclosures and GFCI protection
Permit fees . New Hanover County charges per circuit
The federal 30C alternative fuel vehicle refueling property credit covers 30% of your EV charger installation cost, up to $1,000. That applies to both the charger hardware and the labor. You claim it on your taxes , not a rebate, but real money back.

What You Should Know
Before you book an EV charger install.
Level 1 Is Too Slow for Most People
A regular 120V outlet adds about 4 miles of range per hour. If you drive 40 miles a day, that's 10 hours of charging overnight. Level 2 on a 240V circuit adds 25–30 miles per hour. Most people who try Level 1 end up calling us within a month.
You Need a 240V / 50A Circuit
An EV charger needs its own dedicated circuit . same kind that feeds your dryer or range, but on its own breaker. Can't share it with anything else. That's what we install: a new 50A or 60A breaker, new wire run, and the outlet or hardwire connection.
Check Your Panel Capacity First
Older 100-amp panels usually can't support an EV charger on top of everything else. If your panel is full or undersized, you'll need a panel upgrade before the charger goes in. We check this during the estimate , so there are no surprises.
Outdoor Install? No Problem.
Not everyone has a garage. We install chargers on exterior walls, carports, and driveway-side locations all the time. Outdoor installs need a weatherproof enclosure and GFCI protection, which adds a little to the cost but is straightforward.
Permits Are Required
Every new 240V circuit in New Hanover County requires a permit and inspection. This isn't optional . it's code. We pull the permit, schedule the inspection, and make sure it passes. If someone says they can skip the permit, find a different electrician.
Distance from the Panel Matters
If your panel is in the garage and the charger goes on the garage wall, you're looking at 10–15 feet of wire. If the panel is in a utility closet on the other side of the house, that wire run gets long and the cost goes up. Conduit adds more than Romex. We measure during the estimate.
Looking for Tesla Wall Connector Installation?
We're certified Tesla installers. If you've already got the Wall Connector or you're about to order one, we have a dedicated page that covers the hardwire process, electrical requirements, and what to expect.
Pricing depends on circuit distance from the panel and whether your panel has capacity. Tesla Wall Connector installations cost more because they require hardwiring on a 60A circuit with 6-gauge wire. Cliff quotes everything itemized . You see the hardware, wire, breaker, permit, and labor as separate line items.
If your panel is 100 amps or already close to full, probably. An EV charger pulls 40–60 amps on its own dedicated circuit . that's a big draw on top of your AC, water heater, and everything else. We check your panel capacity during the estimate, before quoting anything. If you need an upgrade, we'll tell you and quote it separately. A lot of our EV jobs are panel upgrade + charger install in the same trip.
Yes, technically. Every EV comes with a Level 1 charger that plugs into a standard 120V outlet. The problem is speed . you're getting about 4 miles of range per hour. If you drive 30–40 miles a day, you need 8–10 hours plugged in just to break even. Level 2 on a 240V circuit gives you 25–30 miles per hour. Most people start with Level 1 and call us within the first month.
Yes. The federal 30C tax credit covers 30% of your EV charger installation cost, up to $1,000. That includes both the charger hardware and the labor. It's not a rebate . you claim it when you file your taxes. Keep your invoice. Your accountant will need it.
Most charger installs are done in half a day . 3 to 4 hours for a straightforward garage install with the panel nearby. If the panel is far from the charger location or the run goes through conduit, add a couple hours. If you also need a panel upgrade, plan for a full day. Either way, you're charging that night.
Yes . we do outdoor installs regularly. Driveway-side walls, carports, the side of the house. The charger goes in a weatherproof enclosure with GFCI protection, and everything is rated for outdoor use. Down here near the coast, we pay extra attention to salt air exposure and make sure the connections and enclosures are going to hold up.
Yes. Every new 240V circuit in New Hanover County requires a permit and inspection. We pull the permit, do the install, and schedule the inspection. The inspector checks the breaker, wire gauge, connections, and grounding. If someone offers to install without pulling a permit, that should tell you something about the quality of their work.
