Cliff walks the property, opens the panel, and runs a load calculation based on what you're actually drawing today and what you plan to add. You get an itemized quote: hardware at cost, labor separate. The number on the quote is the number on the invoice.

Permitting & Duke Energy

Cliff pulls the electrical permit through New Hanover or Pender County. If the meter base needs to come out, he handles the Duke Energy coordination so you don't have to make those calls.

The Swap

Old panel out, new panel in. Every circuit labeled, every connection torqued to spec. If it's a full service change, we replace the meter base, service entrance cable, and grounding system too.

Inspection & Power On

The county inspector signs off on the permit and Duke Energy restores the meter, usually the same day. Cliff walks you through your new breaker layout and hands over the paperwork.

Breakers Trip Under Normal Use

Running the microwave and hair dryer shouldn't trip a breaker. If it does, the circuit is overloaded or the breakers are worn out.

Panel Is Warm or Buzzing

A panel that's warm to the touch or making noise has loose connections or overloaded circuits. Both are fire hazards. If you smell melting plastic, turn off the main breaker and call immediately.

Lights Dim When Appliances Kick On

Lights that flicker or dim when the AC or dryer starts mean your system is struggling to handle the load. Common in older homes that have added appliances over the years.

100-Amp Panel, Modern Appliances

100 amps was plenty in 1985. Add a heat pump, electric range, a couple of window units, and you're past what the panel can handle. Most of the older homes in Monkey Junction, Myrtle Grove, and the beach communities are still running original 100-amp panels from the 1970s and 80s.

Adding EV Charger, Generator, or Hot Tub

An EV charger pulls 40–60 amps on a dedicated circuit. A generator transfer switch needs dedicated space. Hot tubs draw 40–50 amps. Your panel needs room for all of it.

Insurance Company Is Asking Questions

Insurers are flagging Federal Pacific, Zinsco, and old fuse boxes. Some carriers in coastal NC won't renew your policy until the panel is replaced. Cliff has handled dozens of insurance-required panel swaps across New Hanover County.

Fuse Box or Split-Bus Panels

Screw-in fuses and split-bus panels from the '60s and '70s weren't built for what homes draw today. Replacement parts are scarce and breakers are no longer manufactured. Time to swap it out.

Safety Hazard

Federal Pacific, Zinsco,
& Challenger panels.

Homes built in the 1970s and 1980s across Myrtle Grove, Monkey Junction, and the beach communities were frequently built with Federal Pacific Stab-Lok or Zinsco panels. These aren't just outdated. They're dangerous.

Federal Pacific Stab-Lok breakers have a documented failure rate of 25–60%. They don't trip when they should, which means the wire overheats instead of the breaker shutting off. Look for orange toggle switches.

Zinsco panels fail differently. The aluminum bus bars corrode and the breakers fuse to the bus, causing arcing and overheating at the connection.

Insurance carriers are catching on. Some won't write or renew a policy with these panels in place. If it's a Federal Pacific or Zinsco, it needs to come out.

01 How much does a panel upgrade cost? +

A straight panel swap (same amperage, same location) costs less than a full service change. A service upgrade, where Cliff replaces the meter base, service entrance cable, and grounding, is a bigger job. Everything is quoted itemized so you see hardware costs and labor separately.

02 How long does a panel upgrade take? +

A panel swap is typically done in a day. Power is off for 4–6 hours. A full service change (new meter base, mast, SE cable) can take a full day. Duke Energy typically handles the reconnect the same day, but their schedule can push to next morning.

03 Do I need a permit for a panel upgrade? +

Yes. Every panel upgrade in New Hanover and Pender County requires an electrical permit and inspection. Cliff pulls the permit and schedules the inspection. If someone offers to do it without a permit, walk away. Unpermitted work creates problems when you sell the house or file an insurance claim.

04 Will I lose power during the upgrade? +

Yes, power is off while the old panel comes out and the new one goes in. Plan for 4–6 hours on a panel swap, or a full day if it's a service change. Duke Energy pulls the meter before we start and restores it after inspection.

05 Should I upgrade to 200 or 400 amps? +

200 amps handles most homes. If you're adding an EV charger, generator, pool equipment, and a workshop, then 400 might make sense. Cliff runs a load calculation to figure out what you actually need, not what sounds impressive.

06 What's the difference between a panel swap and a service upgrade? +

A panel swap replaces the box. Same amperage, same service entrance. A service upgrade changes the capacity (usually 100 to 200 amps) and typically requires a new meter base, service entrance cable, and updated grounding. The scope is bigger, the cost is higher, and the Duke Energy coordination takes more time. Cliff will tell you which one you need after the site visit.

07 Is there a tax credit for panel upgrades? +

The 25C panel upgrade tax credit expired December 31, 2025. If you completed an upgrade before that date, you may still be able to claim it on your return. Talk to your tax preparer. Cliff provides the documentation you need. Check for new federal or state incentives as they become available.

08 Do I actually need a panel upgrade? +

Not always. Some homes just need a couple of circuits reorganized or a subpanel added. Cliff will tell you if a full upgrade is necessary or if a simpler fix gets you where you need to be. If a subpanel solves the problem, he's not going to quote you a full panel swap.

09 Can you upgrade my panel if I'm adding an EV charger? +

That's one of the most common reasons people call. A Level 2 EV charger pulls 40–60 amps on a dedicated 240V circuit. If you're on a 100-amp panel, there's usually not enough capacity. Cliff can upgrade the panel and install the charger circuit in the same trip. One permit, one inspection, one day.
